Workshops and Classes

Teaching artists at any level is an absolute love of mine. Be it a child with a vivid imagination, a beginner who is just starting the journey to paint, or seasoned, established artists looking for new insight into how they can master their craft, teaching the hows and whys of paint slinging is my thing.

My workshops are a bit different than the norm in that I guide and teach you to use your own perspective, experience, and inspirations as a jumping off point for what you paint, rather than offering a demo or style to copy. Teaching painters the skills and techniques for pulling from their own well source helps them build muscle memory and confidence in the path to finding their own artistic voice. It is important for me, as an educator, to show you how to grasp the full range of what you are capable of creatively, and lead you to the skills and techniques you need to be successful.

From young painters to older painters, my classes are designed to give you a fun, welcoming environment to learn the fundamentals so that you leave with a stronger foundation to build upon, but have a riot of a time doing so.  I do want you to understand the importance of why those fundamentals matter when they are bridged with your experiences though, so in between a lot of laughter, learning takes place.

For more established painters, my workshops and consultations are designed to give you deeper insight into how and what you are currently painting, as well as identify specific goals you wish to reach in mastering the craft of painting and creative expression. Being approachable and knowledgeable is my pledge as a teacher, which comes from my full time practice of painting and study myself. Sharing that knowledge and guidance with other painters who have chosen our field as an occupation is part of how I give back with service and love.

From one day painting experiences to 5 day workshops, I offer a large range of classes and workshops for Creatives at any level. I also offer one on one consultations and studio visits for the professional artist needing a bit personal guidance on the business end or private lessons.

Tulsa, Oklahoma May 25th-28th

Held at Hardesty Art Center in downtown Tulsa, Mastery of Craft is for the painter who is actively engaged in a consistent painting practice and building a body of work to sell or for a show. Unlike the other workshops, artists bring the ideas they are currently working on and over the course of 4 days develop a plan, paint toward your goals, and receive critiques and skills you need to get YOUR work ready.

Because this workshop is filled with working artists, it is most academic in nature, with discussions around craft, pushing past ordinary, technical demos, business, and fine tuning your artistic voice. It also comes with a one on one video consult either before or after. Mastery of Craft will only be offered three times this year, once in Tulsa and twice in Mobile, Al.

Oklahoma City June 1-4
Held at Edmond's Fine Art Center in Oklahoma City, and combined with my solo figurative show there, this workshop is all about experiencing the freedom and creativity in painting the face.

For many of us, learning to paint a face with symmetry and realism was either a daunting task or a huge goal. It came with fear and trepidation because…. It’s a face! The idea that we could paint a face with emotion, in a different pose than straight forward, or with a creative voice unlike any other was a bit out of the question. Not anymore!

The Imaginative Face workshop is filled with fun, unorthodox techniques that show you how to take the idea of painting a predictable face and creating a unique, one of a kind face based on emotions, altering the facial features, and learning how to change the position of the head on its axis.

I will teach you how to engage your own creativity to create a painting around a character that you design with personal and imaginative traits. You will also learn how to take a wrecked painting and turn it into a powerful portrait using an altered photo reference, mixed media, and collage.

This workshop will take the fear out of faces and replace it with the fun of realizing altering the painted face is all about freedom, learning to adapt with intuition, and finding out the fundamentals of the facial form that will create dramatic impact for the viewer. It will also give you a ton of insight into how valuable your own creative voice is and how to tap into that when you approach the canvas.

At the end of our time together, you will be carrying with you a rather full bucket of new skills as well as several finished portraits. More importantly you will gain the knowledge of how to create this way again, and again, and again!
